cahoots

Rhonda11th January 2008 - 10:40 AM
Has anyone heard of a band called Cahoots? I believe they sing a song about a swamp water booger man but I don't know the name of the song. If anyone knows the name of the song I would love to know what it is.

There is a cajun band named "Cahoots" that you can find through
Yahoo > search for Cajun Artist > when the list appears scroll to Cahoots' website.

The group you are looking for is a Colorado based country group, and has nothing to do with the Cajun band named the cahoots. So far I have been unable to find them, but the song you are looking for (a fantastic song, by the way) was released in the 80s.... the cajun band "cahoots" didn't get together until 1997.

The name of the song is "Legend of the Parlangua". I also have been trying to find a copy of the song, but I have not found it yet. If anyone knows where I can get this please email me. I am not sure what the name of the band is either.

Chris14th September 2004 - 12:20 AM
The name of the band was Cahoots. The song "Legend of the Parlangua" was on their first album: "In Cahoots". It's on track one, side one. (I have a copy of the album right in front of me. No, sorry, it's not for sale.)

Cahoots was comprised of Lloyd Barnett (bass, vocals and wrote most of the songs), Ann Marie Barnette, his lovely wife and angel of a singer, Willy Angel (lead guitar), Mac Eisensohn (drums), Vaughn Meyer (keyboards) and a few others.

The album is (c) 1983 AJC Records PO Box 20534 Denver, CO 80220 so you might have some luck tracking it down that way.

I had an Email address for Lloyd but that address is no longer valid.

However, than band I ply in (Rose in the Heather) will be releasing our second CD soon and track #3 is our version of Legend of the Parlangua. Check out http://www.shamrockgold.com/rose for more details.

The Legend of the Parlangua Down on the bayous of Louisiana Where the swamp moss grows on the back of your hand. Papa set out from our one-room shack, Said he went fishin' but he never came back. And Mama said "Son, don't you ever go out To Leroux swamp when the sun goes down. A creature down there called the Parlangua, He got your brother, now he's got your pa. Refrain: The Parlangua's the swamp boogie man Half alligator and the other half man. Son don't go when you hear the call, Of the swamp water booger, the Parlangua. I told my mama gotta make things right, Going huntin' down in Leroux swamp tonight. The stories that the old men told to me, Ya gotta stick 'im with a stick from a sweet gum tree. A whippoorwill cried and I prayed to God Then I headed for the swamp in a cold grey fog. Hours passed, it was drizzling' rain When I realized I'd lost my way. Refrain A chillin' fear inside of me As I whittled off a stick from a sweet gum tree. Spanish moss hanging all around, Stoppin' to listen at every sound. I stumbled and fell tangled up in vines, Fear and panic shootin' through my mind. Tried to rise and then I heard him scream, The Parlangua standin' over me. And down on the bayous of Lousiana where the swamp moss grows on the back of your hand. My mama lives alone in a one-room shack, Her boy went huntin' but he never came back. And... Refrain

This was written and produced by a local band in Denver. At one time the played at a local nightclub on Colfax. A friend of mine had wriiten a few songs for them. He has long passed away but if anyone has a copy of anouther song on that album (Lady Please) I would love to get a copy. Even just a copied copy so I may hear it again. It had certain meaning to me.
Thanks

Chris,

Could you send me a list of the song names that are on the Cahoots Album recorded in 1983? And do you have contact info on any of the former band members?

By the way, I am placing an order with CD Baby for the "Rose in the Heather" CD. I have heard good things about it.

Thanks in advance of any info you can provide me.

did you ever find your copy of the legand of the parlagua? I have it if you are still interested. I found out a few years ago when I did my search for it that the band had broken up and that the song was no longer in production and the artist said it probably will never be again.

Doug13th December 2006 - 9:33 PM
Kevin, no I didn't find it. I've been on the net every night lately. It would be great if I could get a recording from you. I would be willing to pay whatever I need to get a good sounding copy. I'm in North Dakota right now, headed for Denver for Christmas. Let me know how I can get in touch with you, my email is schwieder3@hotmail.com.

Thanks for responding, I'm looking forward to hearing that song again!

Kevin, I got the song emailed to me! I can't believe it, what a great song. I still am very interested in getting an analogue copy, if you have a record or tape, I sure would like to get a copy of it, also any other music they did. I don't know of any of their other music, but I'd like to get my hands on anything they did.

Thanks for the responses.

I heard "Parlangua" by Cahoots when it was first released, loved it, and performed it on-stage while our local garage-band was still active .... and our audiences loved it too. Unfortunately, I never found the song on 45-rpm or vinyl albums -or- cassette tapes (and it was released before the CD format was available). I've been searching for it on Limewire.com for 2 years, but no luck (great site for music downloads, btw). It has some sentimental value for me and I would love to hear it again .... so I would be very grateful to anyone who could send a copy to me at this address:
Seeker5307@gmail.com

Would also love to know if "Parlangua" is based on actual folklore, or was the story invented by the person who wrote this song ??

Thanks in advance

Just received the mp3 file, burned it to DVD, played it a dozen times already, and still lovin' it Sound quality is excellent.

Thank you, Howard ... what a nice surprise :D
~L~

Oh ... a bit of trivia .... this group is / was named CAHOOTS , based in Colorado but no longer performing. NOT to be confused with another group named IN CAHOOTS based in England and still active. Thought this might be useful if anyone is trying to find Parlangua on e-Bay or elsewhere. Hope this helps.

Wow ! Lenged of the Parlangua! My aunt and uncle lived in denver for a short time ,maybe that is where they got the album in 83? Me as well as a 7 year old kid as well as all of my cousins in Mississippi loved the song as my aunt played it every day for us ! What a wonderful song . That song came out right around the time Swamp thing was on HBO as my childhood memory serves. I have wanted this song since 83. Everyone has made requests for it so I would like to get a copy in any or several formats. I will contact my aunt tommorrow to see if she still has the LP or maybee one of my cousins has a copy . I will keep all posted and if I do have a cess to a copy I will send it to all who are Going huntin' down in Leroux swamp tonight.

Been looking for this song for holloween. Haven't been able to find it. Can you please email it to me. My email address is dwf279@netscape.net. Is there any other band that sings it besides cahoots, and rose in the heather. I live in louisiana and could have sworn it was by a cajun band.

Deanna, Sent.
I don't know if any one else has recorded it, but I don't believe so.
I've never heard Rose In The Heather

Deanna27th October 2007 - 10:42 AM
I never heard of them either but when I was looking for the song this name came up. I listened to it and it was the song

Howard27th October 2007 - 11:54 AM
Deanna & Gary

To my knowledge, no one else but the Cahoots and Rose In The Heather have recorded and released this song. I have both copies, and the Cahoots original version is by far the best.

Cahoots recorded it at Juniper Studios at Pine Colorado, just outside of Denver in 1983. They released it on 33rpm LP under the lable, AJC Records in Denver Colorado. I have the LP in front of me now.

Rose in the Heather recorded it earlier this year or late last year. They are out of Oregon or Washington state.

If you could please forward on a clear version of the song, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rhonda,
Cahoots used to play in the Denver area in the mid 80's.
The song you are refering to is called the "Parlingqua"
( excuse my spelling)it is about a creature that is half alligator and the other half man. The song is about a mother and two sons that live in the swamp "where swamp moss grows on the back of your hand". The boys go out to hunt the Parlingqua that can only die with the stick from a sweet gum tree and only one boy comes back. The other son eventually goes back out to get the Parlingqua and never comes back. "Now the mother lives alone in a one room shack".I only hear the song these days every two or three years. Very good song and story. Hope this helps.

John

Hi Rhonda

Cahoots was a fantastic house band in Aurora Colorado in the mid-eighties. They played at an historic country music club called Four Seasons. The band was fronted by Lloyd Barnett, an extraordinarily talented songwriter and performer. His wife Annie backed him on vocals and did lead on several songs. The radio station I worked at then, KBRQ, played their music.

The tune you're referring to is "Legend of the Parlangua." It's been a *few* years since I heard it - my album was stolen in a house burglary, and there's no way to replace it - but the lyrics as I recall are below.

Down in the bayous of Louisiana,
Where the swamp moss grows on the back of your hand.
Papa set out from our one-room shack,
Said he went fishin' but he never came back.

And Mama said "Son, don't you ever go out
To Leroux swamp when the sun goes down.
Creature down there called the Parlangua,
He got your brother, now he's got your Pa.”

Chorus:
The Parlangua's the swamp boogie man
Half alligator and the other half man.
Son don't go when you hear the call:
Of the swamp water booger, the Parlangua.

I told my mama, "Gotta make things right,
Going huntin' down in Leroux swamp tonight.
The stories that the old men told to me,
You gotta stick it with a stick from a sweet gum tree."

A whippoorwill cried and I prayed to God,
Then I headed for the swamp in a cold gray fog.
Hours passed, it was drizzling' rain,
When I realized that I had lost my way.

Chorus

A chillin' fear inside of me
As I whittled off a stick from a sweet gum tree.
Spanish moss hanging all around,
Stoppin' to listen at every sound.

I stumbled and fell tangled up in vines,
Fear and panic shootin' through my mind.
Tried to rise and then I heard him scream:
The Parlangua standin' over me.

Down on the bayous of Lousiana,
Where the swamp moss grows on the back of your hand.
My mama lives alone in a one-room shack-
Her boy went huntin' but he never came back

Chorus, repeat

Rhonda, the song you seek is called "Legend of the Parlangua" released in 1981 by a group in Denver called Cahoots. If you go to YouTube, you will find a video that someone put together around the song. I have no idea who did this, but it is kind of flattering that they would go to this length for our record.

Take care, and thanks.

The song is titled :"Legend of the Parlangua"

on the album titled "In Cahoots" 1983

By the group Cahoots. Who lived in the Denver area of Colorado

The group broke up shortly after this first album

I lived in Denver at the time and went dancing at the club they played in nearly every weekend.

They were a really good group and I was sorry to hear they had split up.

Here are the lyrics to "Legend of the Parlangua" and at the bottom a web site to hear the original version by "Cahoots", from the Album "In Cahoots". They sold many copies of the cassette every night they played, contrary to one post that said there was only 2 copies ever made.

Legend of the Parlangua

I too love that song. I am a yankee in cajunland.
Is there any way I can get info on the group, a copy of the song and also anything else they recorded.
This is the 10th week I've been looking on the net in my spare time.
Also anyone who has similar cajun story songs or anything like "the Legend..." I will pay.

Please, please reply.

Hello. I'm from Denver and used to listen to this song ad nauseam with my father every time we went fishing. That tape has long since been lost but I've given him hope that we could somehow get a copy of Parlangua on this new-fangled interweb.
If someone could e-mail a copy to me at iostream@mindspring.com it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance.

Yes the song is called Legend of the Parlangua by Cahoots! Not to be confused with other bands named In Cahoots. Its hard to obtain this song but if you like a copy and have never found it you can download it here. I know you sent this question many years ago but I found this and decided to answer since no one else did :) Hope it helps if you don't already know!

http://www.wix.com/sean806/legendoftheparlangua

you will need to select the song then you will be directed to megaupload and you will have to enter a verification code on the right hand side of the page and then hit download. Then you will have a to wait because you are not a member but don't worry it won't cost you anything at all. You will just have to wait 45 seconds to download it and then you will have the song and should be able to listen to it on windows media player if you have it! good luck :) bye bye

Sincerly,

Joe
